Town Crier Bakery 215-794-9910: Deck the Doors!!!!!

Town Crier Bakery 215-794-9910: Deck the Doors!!!!!

Deck the Doors!!!!!

Deck the Doors of Peddlers Village Shops ...with boughs of holly, fans of apple, ornaments of fruit, pomegranate, pineapples, and all things natural ... A 1926 issue of House Beautiful illustrates several fruit-laden wreaths and explains, “Of late years, besides the staple wreaths of plain greens to which we have long been accustomed, the holiday's emblems have blossomed forth,--or perhaps we should say fruited forth,--with richness of color produced by the use of either natural or artificial fruit as an embellishment. This idea was undoubtedly suggested by the gorgeous Italian carvings and terra cottas of the Renaissance…”

Naples and the Love of Bread

Neapolitan Cuisine is without doubt the most celebrated Italian cooking style with the use of their local fresh produce that isir cultivated in the rich soil. The cooking of the region of Campania seems to symbolize the most stereotypical Italian cooking. Naples is birthplace to pizza and delicious hearthwarming breads, Growing up there was a truly a gastronomical adventure for us foodies. Here is a recipe for a simple Italian Bread. We have added a touch of my hometown with fresh mozzerella and basil and tomatoes. Basic Italian Bread Dough 4 1/2 cups bread flour 1 pk dry yeast dissolved in 2 cups luke warm water 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon sugar 4 tablespoons olive oil . Here are the instructions I hope you enjoy this like I did with my family. Mix until forms a ball, knead until smooth and elastic, add more flour if dough is sticky , this should not be dry but firm until a ball forms. Rise in a bowl covered with a wet towel, until doubled in size in warm spot, away from draft.... On a large cookie sheet that has been coated with oil or sprayed with a lighter coating, round rolls or two small bread loaves, which ever shape you prefer. I also use this recipe for pizza dough. Very versatile dough, just a little different directions Let rise for another 1/2 hour. Bake on 430 degrees until light brown about 20 minutes. Remove from oven. Cool. Mangia and Buona Salute !!!!

Why shop Indie?

Why shop Indie?
When you shop at an independently owned business, your entire community benefits:

More of your taxes are reinvested in your community--where they belong. The Environment Buying local means less packaging, less transportation, and a smaller carbon footprint. Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money to beautify your community. The Community Local retailers are your friends and neighbors—support them and they’ll support you .Local businesses donate to charities at more than twice the rate of national chains. Creamy Buttercream with fresh Strawberries

Town Crier Bakery I have really gotten into experimenting with different buttercream flavors (Kerry is going to go crazy) in particular ones with fresh fruit. Shopping at some of our great local farms that we have in our beautiful Bucks County, we landed on strawberries. I must say, this is probably one of my favorite buttercream's I have EVER made. It tasted light and the sweetness came mainly from the strawberries. The flavor profile was perfect according to Krissy with a zest of fresh lemon and Madagascar vanilla brought this creamy fruit swirled buttercream to life. Look for some more fun and exciting summer flavors to come

Bucks County Happening

I’m glad that I posted about exercise earlier this week because you’ll want to go on an extra long run this week so you can enjoy seconds at Town Crier Bakery in Peddler’s Village (I know I did!). With the sweet scents of home-baked goods welcoming us, we arrived at Town Crier last week to learn more about their secrets to baking the perfect sticky buns.

Town Crier Bakery was opened by husband & wife power team Kerry & Roseann. Watching the video below, it’s obvious that they know their way around the kitchen. Kerry began baking at just 13 years old and credits the German bakeries of Philadelphia with teaching him the secrets to amazing baked goods. As you can see from the flattering picture of me stuffing my face below, the sticky buns are irresistible! My boyfriend actually had to pry them away from me.

Town Crier Bakery goes beyond delicious treats, though. Kerry, Roseann, & their entire staff welcomes you into the shop with open arms and engages the community with their blogging & Facebook contests. If you fan them, you’ll get access to secret words & trivia questions for free goods! Roseann has even earned the nickname “cake whisperer” as a result of her personal touch with helping brides find their dream cakes. We left Town Crier not only with gooey hot sticky buns, but with big hugs from the owners & huge smiles on our faces.

The best part is- Town Crier Bakery will be giving away a $50 gift certificate to one lucky Bucks Happening reader! To be entered, just use our “Suggest This” tab to suggest our page on Facebook . You’ll be entered for each person you suggest so the more the better! The drawing will be held one week from today.

Don’t miss Kerry’s step by step guide to making sticky buns. You have to see how amazing they look around the 9:10 mark. (Think of how many sticky buns you can get with the $50 prize!)

Pictures from newspaper article

Baking cake and eating too!!!

Kerry Burns had to drag his wife "screaming and kicking" from her full-time job into the business that was his lifelong dream.

When Kerry Burns was a teenager, his mother made him stop delivering newspapers because he had to get up too early.

To replace his lost income, Burns got a job washing pans in a bakery. In the process, he found his true calling - a profession that has him rising in the wee hours of every morning.

Burns and his wife, Roseann, own the Town Crier Bakery in Peddler's Village, where they sell cakes by the slice, freshly baked breads and sweet pastries to tourists and locals alike.

Over the past three years, the couple has had to roll with the punches, reinventing their bakery and positioning it to succeed through these tough economic times.

"We're simple people," Roseann said. "We're hardworking people trying to make it in these crazy times."

Owning a bakery has been Kerry Burns' lifelong dream. But it wasn't one his wife shared, until he took over the bakery at Peddler's Village, the retail and dining destination in Buckingham.

"I kind of blew him off," Roseann said. "It's never going to happen. Then one day this crazy man said, 'I'm doing it.' "

Not only did he buy the bakery and quit his job as a merchandiser for a group of local grocery stores, but Roseann quit her job, too, as an elementary school assistant.

"She's a Republican, and I'm a Democrat," Kerry said. "But when it comes to business, I'm more conservative; she's more cutting edge."

Kerry is the baking brains behind the operation. He's responsible for the counter shelves filled with cakes, pies, pastries, breads and other goods baked fresh daily.

Roseann, who entered the business "screaming and kicking," has become the public face of the Town Crier Bakery. She meets personally with every bride and prides herself with knowing exactly what a bride wants for her special day - sometimes even before the customer says anything. Her hunches are so dead on that her husband calls her the "cake whisperer."

"I found I have a creative side to me that I never knew I had," she said. "I love it."

The Burnses said they have had their share of rollercoaster rides. They were aggressive in building their business in their first year. During the second year, flour and fuel prices skyrocketed and the economy tanked.

This past year, the couple, who live in Plumstead, focused on building their local clientele base and improving their product selection. Because Peddler's Village is more of a tourist destination, they found that traditional bakery items - like fresh bread and pastries - weren't as strong sellers as items like cake slices and doughnuts.

They also hold daily deals, contests and giveaways to draw traffic. And so far, the hard work has paid off, they said.

"We feel pretty fortunate," Roseann said. "We live within our means. Our bills are being paid. We're surviving."

Breads

A new addition to our bread family. A prosciutto and Salami with cracked pepper bread. This is a super crusty, chewy "white" bread with an airy open-holed crumb with just enough of the meat filling thru-out the inside of the bread. Great dipping bread. I take some light olive oil and some fresh cut basil with just a squeeze of a fresh lemon. Salt and Pepper and of course some fresh garlic. I am a happy woman.

My husband Kerry

I am always posting beautiful pictures of all the work we do. This is one of the bakers behind the scenes my husband Kerry. He truly has such a passion for baking and believes in the keeping it as close to old fashion traditional baking like the bakeries that we loved going to in Philadelphia when we were young. That is also were Kerry learned most of his trade from the bakeries that he worked at in the city. He truly tries to stay true to that way of baking.

Breads

There is a saying "Do like the Romans do" but since I am Neapolitan I say "do like the Neapolitans do". Bread ,wine and cheese what else can you ask for ? Expect good memories around the dinner table with your family. I can remember my parents having wine at the dinner table and adding fresh juicy peaches ( and yes I tried to steal some of the peaches } slicing the bread with the cheese is a simplistic meal but nonetheless as appetizing as any. The array of breads featured are our new artisan breads that wefeature daily. Authentic Italian crusty breads. Buttered top brioche . Savory Focaccia topped with seasonings and cheeses.. Make sure you add one of these favorites to you dinner table and make good memories. Buona Salute

Cake

One of my favorites of course being Italian is our Luscious Cannoli cake. You can actually smell the aroma of the dark chocolate ganache that is poured all over the cake as you are about to taste it. The inside is four layers of rich chocolate cake yes more chocolate that is filled with a rich creamy cannoli cream. The crushed cannoli shell adds the perfect amount of texture to each bite. Truly divine.

Irish Soda Bread

Town Crier Bakery St. Patty's day is right around the corner and why not start thinking about Irish Soda bread. Irish soda bread is made with raisins that has a tough exterior but a tender tangy bite. I love to have it with some apricot-peach jam (Williams Sonoma) just delightful or you can really do like the Irish, enjoy it with some Irish Kerrygold butter. A fun tidbit I found out about the cross in the center of the bread made, is to let the fairies out and to ward off evil, so says Irish folklore. More practically perhaps to allow the dough to rise and for even slicing. Please stop by and have a taste of Ireland.

Butter cake brings back great memories of when I used to live in Philadelphia and the great german bakeries on the corner always had a warm butter cake for you to enjoy. We are proud to still be able to offer our customers this wonderful treat that is sure to be your old time favorite too. Town crier Bakery 215-794-9910

Seasoned Croutons

Well it snowed all night and today. We finally were closed for a day at the bakery which was nice for my husband to have a Saturday off. I was determined to make something that I love with my salad but usually cost me some extra points. Croutons I love croutons yes they are simple food but oh so good when done right. Crunchy and seasoned make your salad worth it when you take a forkful of salad and your croutons in your mouth it is a happy marriage to me. Store bought croutons are high in points so I decided to try making my own. Of course I used a loaf of the Town Crier Bakery french bread that I had brought home. The bread was a day old which was perfect for my crouton adventure a small one but still a adventure for me. I sliced the croutons keeping the cube together. You sprinkle with 1-1/2 tsp salt free seasoning and blend with 1 tsp of garlic powder. Bake until golden brown about 30 minutes. You can store up until a week. 6-8 croutons are only one point. Even a bakery can hold some surprises for us dieters.

What I did with my bread tonight.

My husband brought home a loaf of our mozzarella bread with tomatoes home. Well of course I was mad at him since I am on weight watchers and I have no self control when it comes to bread. Well I had saved up some extra points to cheat tonight.I took the loaf of bread and slice it up and while the oil olive was heating up Sasso Olive oil the best i used it in Itlay the aroma and smell when you are frying it up with fresh basil and garlic brings me back home to Naples. I took the slices of bread and grated some fresh locatelli cheese and sharp provolone and put it in the frying pan and let it sauté until it was a golden brown. When it was done a few more drizzles of oil olive and it was so good worth every point of it. Enjoy e Mangia bene

The Fastnachts are coming

The Fastnachts are Coming!! Donut Day is Tues., Feb 16, the one and only day for Fastnachts! They are available in Cinnamon Sugar, Granulated Sugar, Powdered Sugar, Glazed and Plain, plus all of our other kinds of donuts will be available!! Now Taking Orders!!Immigrants have brought various doughnut varieties to the United States. To celebrate Fat Tuesday in southeastern Pennsylvania, churches sell a potato starch doughnut called a Fastnacht (or Fasnacht). The treats are so popular there that Fat Tuesday is often called Fastnacht Day. The Polish doughnut, the pÄ…czki, is popular in U.S. cities with large Polish communities such as Chicago, Milwaukee, and Detroit.
In regions of the country where apples are widely grown, especially the Northeast and Midwest states, cider doughnuts are a harvest season specialty, especially at orchards open to tourists, where they can be served fresh. Cider donuts are a cake donut with apple cider in the batter. The use of cider affects both the texture and flavor, resulting in a denser, moister product. They are often coated with either granulated or powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar.

Italian heritage and breads

Yesterday I decided to invade my husbands territory in the back of the bakery which means I entered the "no Roseann allowed bake zone". The back of the bakery where Kerry bakes is usually left up to the real bakers. Well I decided to let my self wander to the back and bring back some of the great memories of living in Naples, Italy flow into the breads Kerry was making today. When I lived in Naples, we would buy our breads at the local bread store just around the corner were every morning they would come out fresh from the brick ovens. The smells were savory and sweet. The fun part of it as a child was when my dad would bring the fresh bread home and we would lower the basket down from the apartment and pull it back up quickly ( few times I would get tempted to be naughty and swing it around)so we could pull apart the bread and slab butter on it yes butter. One of my favorite breads was a crusty bread that was filled with fresh tomatoes basil and roasted peppers with garlic and olive oil baked inside of the bread. Well let me tell you one way trip to a foodies divine adventure that makes you want to keep going back. I made the bread today and just added my spin on to it and added fresh mozzarella and enclosed. I truly was proud of myself and felt like I was back in Naples for even just a few minutes.

Henna Design Wedding cake 4 Tier

This amazing wedding cake was designed after the brides favorite henna design she loved and we recreated for her on the wedding cake. The cake was creamy buttercream and almond poundcake filled with raspberry mousse.
